FF Board Chair Marta Belcher and Advisor Kristin Smith discuss use cases for blockchain in art and music
Imagine writing a computer program that allows a user playing a song on their device to automatically transfer a millionth of a cent to the songwriter and a millionth of a cent to the singer for every second of a song that a user plays. This would be vastly better than the current way artists and copyright holders are compensated for their work, and smart contract technology makes this possible.
At the Copyright Society’s 2021 Midwinter Meeting, Filecoin Foundation Board Chair Marta…
The Filecoin Foundation is part of the community building the next generation of the web. Our mission is to develop, enrich, support, and grow both the Filecoin and Web3 ecosystems. We want to cultivate and create value for everyone involved in building the decentralized future of the web.
That’s why we’re excited to expand our team. We’re hiring Developer Evangelists, Program Managers, and Startup Operators. If you’re interested in the work we’re doing at the Filecoin Foundation and you’re curious about joining our team, we invite you to participate in a webinar with the Foundation team on Thursday, February 18…
Filecoin Foundation Board Chair Marta Belcher joined the BBC’s Ritula Shah on The Real Story to discuss the promise of Filecoin and the future of cryptocurrency.
Belcher began by explaining the built-in economic incentives of the Filecoin network. “Filecoin allows you to write a program that says, ‘Store my files on someone else’s computer, chopped up and encrypted, and then check whether they’re being stored and automatically compensate people for storing my files,’” she said. “That creates an incentive layer, potentially, for a web that is decentralized.”
Asked about the recent surge in Bitcoin’s price, Belcher responded, “The price of…
“The internet is in the middle of a revolution: centralized proprietary services are being replaced with decentralized open ones; trusted parties replaced with verifiable computation; brittle location addresses replaced with resilient content addresses; inefficient monolithic services replaced with peer-to-peer algorithmic markets.” — Filecoin White Paper, 2017
More than half of the world’s population is online and connected. Collectively, we create more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data daily — from photos and videos, tweets and texts, Reddit posts and research reports, and so much more.
But today’s internet is highly centralized; our web infrastructure is dominated by just a few…
In 2017, the creators of Filecoin envisioned that an independent Filecoin Foundation would serve as the long-term governance body for the Filecoin Ecosystem. They gave the Foundation the mandate to “grow an open ecosystem for decentralized storage” and to “give developers an open and sustainable platform to build, enhance and monetize those services.” They wanted the Foundation to be modeled on Foundations for other open source projects like the Apache Software Foundation, the Mozilla Foundation and the Linux Foundation.
In October, we announced the details of the Filecoin Foundation (FF) and its mission. The Filecoin Foundation is an independent organization…
